The Convention on the Rights of the Child

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (also known as the CRC) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 20th November 1989. A "Convention" is a formal agreement between States.

The CRC defines a “child” as a person below the age of 18.

The CRC has been ratified by more governments than any other human rights instrument. The word ratify means to approve and agree to abide by what the Convention says. So far 193 countries have ratified the CRC.

The CRC believes that children (all human beings below the age of 18) are born with fundamental freedoms and the inherent rights of all human beings. Many governments have made laws, put in place offices and programmes to ensure the protection and realisation of the rights of those under the age of 18. Every government that has ratified the CRC including the Government of the Republic of Zambia must report to the United Nations on children's rights in their country.
